Middle School Concept to be Adopted at Lawrence/Nelson

On Monday, May 18th, the school board voted to adopt a middle school concept at Lawrence/Nelson.  This means that the upcoming sixth graders will be taking classes in Nelson.  Their class schedule is listed at right.  What does this mean for our sixth graders?

  • Less of a transition from elementary school to junior high, wherein this year, the students will change classes and instructors each class period; have the responsibilities associated with taking a technology device to/from school, and then next year, they will add the extra-curricular options, such as sports, FBLA, etc.
  •  Recognition for academic achievement, such as honor roll status, academic competitions, and individual goal setting.
  • Specialized teachers often mean an increase in tests scores as well!  With this change also comes higher expectations for our students in terms of responsibility, helping our students to mature both academically and socially.

The sixth graders will be responsible for a technology device this upcoming school year, which is a MacBook Air, as many school assignments will be completed using this piece of technology.  “Roll Out” night for the laptops will be on August 3rd at 6 PM in Nelson, and students have the option of paying the $30 user fee on this night and taking the device home with them on this night, or not paying the fee, and leaving the device at school.  Either way, please plan to attend the roll out night to learn more about technology expectations in our school, and what this means for your child.  You will also be provided with information on PowerSchool (to monitor your child’s attendance, grades, and lunch balance), Schoology (our online student management system), and links for information located on our school website.

Mrs. Porter and Mrs. Epley are working to put together activities in June and July with the middle school students, so be watching the mail for information on these events. In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact either one of us!  Mrs. Porter's email is cporter@southcentralunified.org and Mrs. Epley's email is depley@southcentralunified.org.  The school calendar can be found at:  /vnews/display.v/ART/5505ffdd00e08. Also, please note that the September 25th inservice may be moved to September 23rd at the June board meeting.
