7th Grade STEM Learns about Cells

In Life Science the 7th Graders are discussing the characteristics of life. One of those characteristics is to have organization and the basic unit of organization for living things is the cell - every living organism we know of consists of at least one.

In pairs, students were given slides of different cells - algae, plants, animals and protists. They were to look at them and make 10 observations, along with a sketch. They also attempted to look at bacteria, but quickly realized they were too small to see with our simple light microscopes. Students practiced using a microscope, making observations and sharing information with their classmates. "They did wonderful!" Mrs. Hongsermeier commented. The class will be discussing more about the characteristics of life in the following weeks to come.
