Drug and alcohol awareness

SC celebrates Red Ribbon Week

Every October, the Sandy Creek G.U.E.S.S. (Group United Emphasizing Student Support)  organization helps run the Red Ribbon Week campaign. This year, Red Ribbon Week takes place from the 24th-27th of October. Red Ribbon week is used to bring awareness to drug and alcohol use in America.

“Drugs are awful for you, and it’s nice to have the school spreading awareness to impressionable young teens who could be exposed to them,” said sophomore student, Cassie Perry.

Red Ribbon Week is a national event, but over the past few years Sandy Creek has made an effort to create more exposure at a local level. Efforts have been made to teach students the truth about drugs and alcohol in a safe manner.

Kaylee Lipovsky, high school spanish teacher and former head of the G.U.E.S.S. organization, said, “I love seeing the students involved in the planned activities to help them be more aware about making great choices.”

This year, Sandy Creek students are dressing up for the different days of the week: Tuesday is red and white day, Wednesday is wacky day, Thursday is class color day and Friday is costume day. The students are given the opportunity to win prizes if their name is drawn out of a bucket. Additionally, drug facts are read off at the end of the day to educate the students and further the effort to prevent drug use.

“It’s a great way to inform students about drug and alcohol abuse,” said senior Desma Hamilton.
