High school library introduces a welcoming environment

Recently, the school library has been undergoing changes to its decor. Mrs. Mame Hild, high school para-educator, and Mr. Jeremy Borer, tech director and media specialist, are both new to the library this year and have decided to make it a more inviting place for students to work.

While the changes are slow, they are dramatic. Outdated reference material has been purged and a number of book shelves have been removed, opening up more space for students to work.

“So far, the process has taken 2-3 months, and we are not quite done,” said Hild.

Hild plans to bring patio furniture soon to make the student lounge area even more comfortable for the students. The library currently contains a single couch, but soon, students will have access to more furniture, creating a more conducive atmosphere for student studying.

“I like it because it feels more open, and it affects my studying positively,” said freshman Serenity Caves.

On the other hand, some students are having a difficult time adjusting to the unfinished product. These students are waiting not so patiently for the library to wrap up it’s improvements, so they can enjoy the fully finished space.

“When I walked into the library, I didn’t like it. The furniture seemed awkward and unfinished. I’m excited for the finished product, though. I think that it will be super nice to have a comfortable place to read, and it will make more kids want to read,” said junior Maci Maldonado.

In addition to reading, the redecorating could improve study habits as well. Students have traditionally avoided the library, but more students are already taking advantage of the open space.

“It’s a better atmosphere to be working in than before, where the students were trapped between bookshelves,” said Hild.
