Students travel to Kearney for AR celebration

SC students read to achieve

The Sandy Creek and Lawrence/Nelson high school students who met their Accelerated Reader (AR) goals took a trip up to the Big Apple in Kearney as a reward for their hard work. These students were given from the beginning of the year until the 9th of December to meet their goals, which are based on students’ individual reading ability.

“It’s really cool that our school will reward us for reading and give us the opportunity to relax and have fun with our peers during such a stressful time of the year” said senior, Lauren Shackelford.

Students loaded the buses at 8:30 in the morning to leave for the Big Apple. While there, students had the opportunity to participate in a number of fun activities, such as laser tag, bowling, billiards, mini golf and assorted arcade games.

“I think it’s really awesome that we’re getting rewarded for reading, and it’s a fun way to end the semester and take our minds off of finals,” said senior, Nate Hays.

Only 9 SC students didn’t meet their goals, but a handful of other students stayed back to catch up on other homework and projects. Theses students will go about their day like normal with the teachers who stayed back at Sandy Creek.

“I think that it’s a good way for students to destress before finals and stop worrying so much,” said Ms. Shandi Tobias.
