Sandy Creek Cougars fall short of gold

The Sandy Creek JV girl’s basketball team traveled to Exeter-Milligan early Saturday morning to take on the Bruning-Davenport/Shickley eagles and the Exeter-Milligan Timberwolves. The Lady Cougars loaded the bus at the end of the tournament sparkling with silver hardware.

“Going into the game without two of our usual people and being in a position that I have never played was a little scary, but once we started playing and relaxing we did really good. We started to trust each other to do their part on the team,” freshman Daelene Hinrichs said.

Sandy Creek does not typically play class D-2 schools, so many players view this tournament as a chance to play other girls that they don’t regularly play with. The Lady Cougars had a very tough game with BDS, but as the game went on the girls found their tune and worked through the pain and finished with the score in their favor 20-19.

“We were down by 6 points going into the 2nd half against BDS. We came out of our huddle knowing we needed to score, and that’s exactly what we did. We fought our way back and ended up going into overtime. In overtime, both teams scored, and we were tied. Then Makenzie Dane scored with 8 seconds left, and we won the game,” said freshman Kyara Fike.

The Sandy Creek Lady Cougars fought hard and managed to hold off the Exeter-Milligan Timberwolves in the second game, with a score of 12-18 at halftime, but they didn’t return to the court with the same attitudes they had stepped off the court with. The game did not end in their favor with a final score of 25-38.
