SCNUSD #5 Preparing Students for the Future

2016-2017 Reasons to Celebrate

SCNUSD #5, Lawrence/Nelson, and Sandy Creek High Schools continue to have great success with their college access programs in the 2016-2017 school year.  As part of the College Access Grant, guidance counselor Connie Porter put together facts about this past school year at Lawrence/Nelson, which support the grant's purpose, researching factors that affect whether or not students go to college.
  • All 9th graders and most of the 10th and 11th graders went on a college visit.  The 9th graders went to a four year college (Hastings College) and a community college (Central Community College).  The 10th and 11th graders could choose their visits which included UNK, UNL, SCC-Beatrice, and SCC-Lincoln.
  • The Apply2College Day was a success with all seniors applying to at least one college.
  • Based on the FAFSA Completion data on the Coordinating Commission For Postsecondary Education, Lawrence/Nelson had the highest FAFSA Completion rate in the state with 93% of our students completing the FAFSA, while Sandy Creek was close behind with a fourth place finish and 82.1% of students completing the FAFSA.
  • As a follow-up, students were assisted with verification and accepting their financial aid awards.
  • We had 75% of our juniors and seniors take at least one dual credit classes with an average of 6.5 credits. One of our students took 15 credits and several took 9 or more credits.  All of the students passed their college classes this semester and only one student dropped a class.  The school district pays tuition and books for students taking college classes.
  • All 11th and 12th grade students were matched with business mentors based on their chosen career pathway and met with them at least three times during the second semester.  The students and some of the mentors worked on a project and students presented their projects at the end of the semester to parents/community/and business partners.
  • A "Junior Day" was held where students worked on personal statements, resumes, and scholarship searches.  We also had a  College Student Panel  which consisted of Lawrence/Nelson and Sandy Creek graduates.  The Panel discussed not only college expectations but also recommendations of what our students can do as seniors to prepare for the transition to college.  A College Quiz Bowl was held to familiarize students with college terms, FAFSA, scholarships, etc.  For fun, the juniors also participated in a Ramen Noodle Cook-Off.
  • Due to the new state requirement, all of the juniors took the ACT and had access to the ACT Online Prep.  Our administration is working on helping teachers with covering ACT standards.  Our district also covers the cost of John Baylor Test Prep  that all juniors take.
  • All seniors attended a Financial Aid Meeting along with many parents.
  • All seniors attended an Educational Planning Program at Hastings College
  • All juniors and seniors completed a scholarship search through EducationQuest.  All seniors who applied for scholarships received at least one scholarship
  • The 9th grade and 12th grade parent meetings held at the beginning of the school year were well attended.

A huge shout out to guidance counselor Connie Porter who was a key factor in making all of this happen at Lawrence/Nelson and Sandy Creek.  Job well done, Mrs. Porter, and check back soon for statistics specific to Sandy Creek juniors and seniors as well.
