Tiny House: Silent Bids to Close on November 30th at Midnight
Featured at the Pheasants Forever Banquet on Friday, November 10th
HERE is a link to the pictures of the tiny house project that our Nebraska Center for Advanced Professional Studies (NCAPS) engineering pathway students are working on. NCAPS is a nationally recognized, innovative high school program which includes college classes taken for dual credit in a student's interest area, whether it be in the field of agriculture, construction, graphic arts, business, education, healthcare, or engineering/manufacturing.
Pathways continue to be added that are relevant to the student's interest area, and all tuition/books are paid for out of the district budget. A new building is currently being constructed as well, which will allow an integrated learning environment for the students in these pathways, housed at Sandy Creek High School, near Fairfield, NE.
Some of the other examples of pathway projects include:
- ag students going on site to learn about innovative techniques being used in agriculture, continued work with drones, and hands-on mobile ag labs
- graphic arts students creating business logos, designs, advertisements, and apps for local business partners, as well as clothing designs.
- healthcare students have taken part in hands-on simulations, ranging from as far as Chadron State College Healthcare Professions Showcase to Bryan College of Health Sciences Simulation Lab to UNMC, UNO, and work with Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital and Brodstone Memorial Hospital in Superior, NE. Students in this pathway also have the opportunity to earn their CNA degree in the spring semester, with the cost of this class and the books being paid for by the district.
Each of our pathway students are matched with a mentor, whom they are meeting with approximately twice per month, and have a project they are working for either the semester or the entire school year. Students will be giving presentations of their projects, which are open to the public, at Sandy Creek on Wednesday, December 6th, from 1 PM to 6 PM and at Lawrence/Nelson on Wednesday, December 13th, from 1 PM to 6 PM.
This mentoring program is a collaborative effort of local business partners and the South Central Nebraska Unified School District #5 (unified school district of Lawrence/Nelson and Sandy Creek). It would not be possible without the generous donation of time and resources by our business partners and community businessmen and women.
Students featured this week for the NCAPS engineering pathway are all seniors: Micah Dolnicek, Trey Himmelberg, Riley Kucera, and Kevin Schroer. The picture attached is of the following people (L to R): Morgan Trausch (ag teacher at Lawrence/Nelson helping to oversee the tiny house project), Doug Klute of Cheever Construction, Kevin Schroer, Micah Dolnicek, Trey Himmelberg, Riley Kucera, Justin Kurtzer of Cheever Construction, and Logan Schnitker (mentor for the students on this project).
Students have framed a tiny house, as well as put on the siding and roof, and are ready to work on electrical work, insulation, and the finishing of the inside of the house, all with hands-on help and advice from Cheever Construction, Logan Schnitker, Morgan Trausch, and Nick Karmazin. Students will be using input from the buyer(s) to finish the inside of the house to the buyer's liking.
The group is accepting silent bids on the house through November 30th, 2017, and will have the house open to the public on Friday, November 10th, starting at 5 PM, prior to the Pheasants Forever Banquet in Nelson, Nebraska. It can be viewed now at Lawrence/Nelson Middle/High School, 850 S. Nevada, Nelson, NE 68961, or at the banquet on the 10th of November in downtown Nelson.
