2018 National Honor Society Induction Held

February 8th, 2018

On Thursday, February 8th, 2018, Lawrence/Nelson inducted five new members into their National Honor Society.  These included juniors Boone Svoboda, Brandi Mazour, Kaylee Kathman, Megan Wheeland and Brody Himmelberg.  These five joined senior NHS members Mattee Kucera, Hayden Epley, Micah Dolnicek, Kevin Schroer, Riley Kucera, and Bailey Cox.

Students inducted for the 2017-2018 school year were as follows:

  • Boone Svoboda (son of Arnie Svoboda & Teri Pond-Svoboda):  Boone has been active in FFA, FBLA, Drama, Band, Football, Basketball, FCA and is the junior class president.  Outside of school, he has helped with meals on wheels, the Salvation Army, FFA Alumni activities and various church events.
  • Brandi Mazour (daughter of Larry & Donna Mazour):  Brandi has been active in volleyball, FBLA, Student Council, FCA, band, choir, color guard, and Journalism.  Outside of school she has helped at the American Legion, and Operation Shine Camp donating countless hours of her time.
  • Kaylee Kathman (daughter of Mitch & Angie Kathman): Kaylee has been active in volleyball, FBLA, FFA, FCA, band, Journalism, L/N Club, Student Council, and HOSA.  Outside of school she has kept busy with an EMT Skills Training course, church smorgasboard, and softball and fire department fundraisers as well.
  • Megan Wheeland (daughter of Kevin Wheeland & the late Renee Wheeland):  Megan has been active in volleyball, basketball, FFA, FBLA, FCA, HOSA, Student Council, Drama, and Teammates. Outside of school Megan has volunteered at the Nelson Santaland for several years and also helped with her church's bible school.
  • Brody Himmelberg (son of Todd & Laura Himmelberg):  Brody has been active in football, basketball, FBLA, FFA, FCA, Student Council, One Act, and archery. Outside of school Brody stays busy helping umpire local softball games and volunteering at the Lawrence soup dinner.

Students who were already members of the organization and are seniors this year include:  

  • Riley Kucera (son of Jim & Judy Kucera):  Riley has been active in football, track and field, quiz bowl, band, L/N club, FCA, and is the junior class president. Outside of school, he has helped serve mass at church, delivered cookies to the elderly and scooped snow for the homebound.
  • Micah Dolnicek (son of John & Beth Dolnicek):  Micah has been active during his high school years in football, basketball, FFA, Quiz Bowl, FCA, and golf. Outside of school he helped with the Lawrence Pee-Wee baseball, 4-H community clean-up and various activities for church.
  • Kevin Schroer (son of Burt & Judy Schroer):  Kevin has been active in the following activities during high school: football, basketball, golf, quiz bowl, FCA, FFA, L/N Club and is a class officer.  Outside of school he has helped with various activities for church, was a camp counselor at Manna Camp, assisted Habitat for Humanity and helped at Catholic Social Services.
  • Bailey Cox (daughter of Terry & Melissa Cox):  While in high school, Bailey has been involved in the following activities: HOSA, volleyball, basketball, cross country, speech, and student council.  Outside of school, Bailey has assisted the community of Lawrence with community surveys, worked at the pancake feed and soup suppers for the Lawrence ball program, and has helped raise money for Wear Yellow Nebraska in which she raised money and biked 25 miles for the organization.
  • Hayden Epley (daughter of Ethan & Dana Epley):  Hayden has been active in the following activities during high school: volleyball, basketball, track, FBLA officer/member, FFA officer/member, student council officer/member, FCA, HOSA, and band. She has also helped with various activities outside of school including SantaLand for the Nelson community club, Nuckolls County fair clean up, church activities, roadside cleanup and community plays in Nelson.
  • Mattee Kucera (daughter of Greg & Teena Kucera):  Mattee has been involved in the following activities during high school: HOSA, FBLA officer, FFA, volleyball, basketball, L/N club, Student council officer, FCA, summer basketball, softball, and her church CCD.  Outside of school, Mattee helps with youth boys' basketball, Lincoln food pantry, candy and cookie plates for the elderly and her church's smorgasboard.
