SCNUSD #5 Attends First HOSA State Leadership Conference

March 19, 2018

SCNUSD #5 students who took part in the HOSA State Leadership Conference on Monday, March 19th, 2018, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

South Central Nebraska Unified School District #5 started a HOSA Chapter this year for our healthcare pathway students.  The group attended their first ever HOSA State Leadership Conference on Monday, March 19th, 2018.  This year's theme was "Create Your Future" for these Health Occupation Students of America.

Twenty students in the district took part in online testing before state was held:  11 from Lawrence/Nelson and 9 from Sandy Creek.  Following the online testing portion, students had the opportunity to take part in the onsite testing.  When not in testing, students could attend the healthcare expo onsite at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Students were limited to two tests on-site, and a total of four tests per member.  Some students were not able to fill all four events due to time conflicts (events overlapping or being carried over into Tuesday, March 20th), but learned much more about the competition and are already looking forward to next year!

Lawrence/Nelson senior Mattee Kucera and freshman Avery Mazour presented on the career field of a nutritionist.

Students competing at the state conference were as follows:

  • Bailey Cox, Behavioral Health, CPR/First Aid & Sports Medicine (LN)

Students had the option of becoming certified in Level 1 of the Stop the Bleed campaign at UNMC.

The students were sponsored by Ashley Borer (Sandy Creek science teacher), Kristi Wehrman (Lawrence/Nelson school nurse and healthcare pathway instructor), and Dana Epley (Lawrence/Nelson principal).  Mrs. Epley also took part in the Bleeding Control Basic 1.0 Course sponsored by the Stop the Bleed Campaign and the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma while Mrs. Borer took part in a breakout session entitled Surgical Technologist - The True Backbone of the Operating Room.  Mrs. Wehrman was kept extremely busy at state and prior to, helping students to prepare for the hands-on testing in nursing assisting and CPR/first aid testing.  Mrs. Wehrman put Brodstone Memorial Hospital physical therapists Colby Fox and Doug Wehrman to work assisting the students with the physical therapy and sports medicine events.  While at state, Mrs. Wehrman had the responsibility of getting supplies in order for students to perform in skills based assessments, ranging from personal hygiene and health care for the elderly to taping, wrapping and providing care for the injured.

A huge thank you to all that helped to make this event possible for our students, and once again to Brodstone Memorial Hospital for their continued assistance with our healthcare pathway students in our competitive events, as well as the rest of our healthcare pathway sponsors:  Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital, Family Medical Center, Hastings Orthopedics, South Central Behavioral Services, Clay County Physical Therapy, Grand Island Surgical Center, and Hastings YMCA.

Our juniors and seniors in the healthcare pathway will be presenting their pathway projects on April 25th, 2018, at Lawrence/Nelson and on May 2nd, 2018 at Sandy Creek.  Seniors at Sandy Creek recently attended an etiquette dinner, where they completed mock interviews with a set of volunteer professionals, and Lawrence/Nelson seniors will be doing the same on April 11th, 2018.
