Sandy Creek High School Students Participate in ESU 9 Sponsored Quiz Bowl

16 Schools, 34 Teams, teams composed of 6 students in each match, 12 toss-up questions per match (with a bonus question if the toss-up was successful), scoring 5 points toss-up and 10 points bonus, double elimination tournament, ESU9 High School Quiz Bowl February 6, 2019.

Three teams of students did a great job representing Sandy Creek in this tournament.

SC White Team composed of Breanna Brennfoerder, Claire Galaway, Ana Lazaro Del Campo, Hayden Shuck, Megan Slechta, and Jaylin Sutton lost their first match to Aurora Black 10-25, tied vs. Doniphan/Trumbull Pink at the end of the match and won on the second overtime question 10-5, then lost to Aurora Red 0-50 to be eliminated from the tournament.  In the third match this very young team was simply overpowered by a more experienced team.

SC Red Team composed of Chase DeVries, Jacob Hagemeier, Jenna Heinz, Jordan Heinz, Kristen Rohrer, and Atley Van Emmerik lost to Hastings High Team 3 by a score of 20-25 and lost to Doniphan/Trumbull Blue 10-15.  The scores reflect the fact that the contests were extremely close with SC losing by only one question each match.

SC Black Team composed of Sam Galaway, Rami Hinrichs, Dylan Schweer, Noah Shackelford, Bailey Switzer, and Brock Sutton beat Red Cloud 15-10, beat Lawrence/Nelson 30-20, lost to Hastings High Team 1 by a score of 15-40, and lost to Sutton Red 10-45.  The final match was extremely competitive with SC only slightly behind in the early questions before Sutton pulled away at the end of the match.  The early victories and the way the tournament was structured means that SC placed somewhere between 9th and 12th out of the 34 teams competing in the ESU9 tournament.

The students would like to thank the parents and grandparents that attended the tournament to support the teams.  Coach Pernicek would like everyone to know that the difficulty level of the questions was extremely high.  The students did an amazing job representing their school and communities.  As the message on the team t-shirts states, the performance and conduct of the SC students in this tournament was “Perni-checked and approved!”
