Raiders Had Tough Face-Off Against Bobcats Last Week

On Wednesday, January 24, the Lawrence/ Nelson Raiders’ basketball teams played the Blue Hill Bobcats. The journalism class served a meal deal of breaded pork, scalloped potatoes, dessert, and drink. At the beginning of girls varsity, our school recognized our National Honor Society. Students inducted into the National Honor Society are outstanding students who demonstrate leadership, service, and character. Our current National Honor Society members are Megan Wheeland, Boone Svoboda, Brandi Mazour, Kaylee Kathman, and Brody Himmelberg. The school will hold a ceremony to induct new junior members into the NHS next Thursday, February 7 at 2:00 p.m.

Before the girls varsity game got underway, Hallie Epley of Lawrence/Nelson and Brooklyn Kohmetscher of Blue Hill both spoke to the crowd about the schools’ sportsmanship goals in hopes that the crowd would follow suit.

Lady Raiders didn’t play their best ball, as they were losing 13-23 at halftime. They couldn’t pull through in the second half, and Blue Hill won 46-23. The Raiders should be able to learn from their mistakes and take them into account as they head into conference games.

After the girls game, the boys started their battle against Blue Hill. The game started off pretty slow for both teams on offense; the score was only 7-5, Blue Hill, after the first quarter. In the second quarter the Raiders started to heat up. They scored 11 points, putting them up 16-13 at halftime. After halftime, however, the Bobcats came out hot and put up 11 points on the Raiders right away, putting the Raiders in a tough position going into the final quarter. The Raiders fought hard in the fourth quarter to get back in the game. Unfortunately, they were unable to match the scoring of Blue Hill, and they ended up losing the game 43-30.

Going forward, the Raiders are looking to come up with some wins, and they are working hard everyday towards making it to state. Come watch and support the Lawrence/ Nelson basketball teams at the next game!
