Sandy Creek Quiz Bowl Competes at SNC Competition

The Southern Nebraska Conference Quiz Bowl was hosted by Thayer Central on March 4th.  In spite of a weather related late start and COLD temperatures, the tournament proceeded.  This year, the format was changed in order to give each team greater opportunities to compete.  In the morning each team participated in two “warm-up” matches.  Each match consisted of 20 toss-up questions with the opportunity for teams to receive a bonus question if they successfully answered the toss-up question.  The results of the morning warm-up matches were strictly for fun and did not affect seeding or bracketing for the double elimination tournament held in the afternoon.

The team of Chase DeVries, Jacob Hagemeier, Jenna Heinz, Jordan Heinz, Kristen Rohrer, and Atley Van Emmerik was competitive throughout the day, but struggled with bonus questions.  Morning results were a 20 – 55 loss to Fairbury B and a 20 – 55 loss to Superior A.  With Quiz Bowl scoring and a 20 question match, these scores represent close contests.  In the afternoon tournament the team experienced a 30 – 55 loss to Thayer Central A, won a close and difficult match over Heartland B 10 – 0, and then lost to Fillmore Central B 5 – 45.

The team of Sam Galaway, Rami Hinrichs, Dyaln Schweer, Noah Shackelford, Bailey Switzer, and Brock Sutton also was competitive throughout the day and experienced a greater amount of success.  In the first morning warm-up match the team tied Thayer Central B 20-20, which led to a sudden-death tie-breaker situation.  After EIGHT tie breakers Sandy Creek was victorious 25 – 20.  The team then faced David City A, winning 35 – 20.  In the afternoon tournament the team faced Heartland B, winning 100 – 20 before losing to Fillmore Central A 60 – 75.  The team then beat Fillmore Central B 50 – 20 before being eliminated by Centennial A 5 – 45.  The team’s efforts placed them among the top eight teams in the tournament.  Nineteen teams from ten conference schools participated in the tournament.  An interesting observation is that the teams that were among the top eight teams in the tournament represented eight different conference schools – indicating that the Southern Nebraska Conference is very competitive academically.

The Quiz Bowl Team members and Coach Pernicek extend a heartfelt thank you to patrons of the district for giving us the opportunity to represent the school in Quiz Bowl competition.
