The Magic of Reading Celebration

October 19, 2017

This afternoon students were entertained by national award winning Omaha magician, Jeff Quinn.  Mr. Quinn came ready to engage and interact with the entire Kindergarten - Fifth Grade classes from Lawrence/Nelson and Sandy Creek.  Students learned about the importance of reading and Nebraska history and celebrities while being amazed with some incredible magic.  Eight students were recognized for not only meeting their goal, but going 200%, and even 300% above their goal.  This hard work did not go unrecognized as students were awarded their very own magic top hat and magic wand that allowed them to join Mr. Quinn on stage to help him perform a trick.  Other students actively participated in other tricks as Mr. Quinn walked into the audience with several tricks.  Every time the students thought they had a trick figured out he would amaze and confuse them by showing them they were wrong.    At the end of the assembly every student that met their goal received a new book and bookmark.  One favorite trick of Mr. Quinn's involved his favorite card trick.  After students were sure his favorite card was an Ace, he turned the card to reveal that his favorite card was his LIBRARY CARD.  We have many more tricks up our sleeves for the upcoming months.  Help encourage your student to meet their goal every quarter.  Remind your students that if they are reading non-fiction books, they can use the book to help take the test.  There will be more hands-on, non-fiction based activities that students can get excited about and earn more AR points, so watch for information to come home with your student.  Mr. Quinn did an excellent job in sharing our message, "The Magic of Reading."  Share in the magic of reading with your student tonight!
