Sandy Creek Students Participate in County Government Day

County Government Day was a good experience for a number of reasons. Most notably, it exposed our students to government on a local level. Students are often bombarded with info about our national and state governments and local government is often overlooked. At County Government Day, the students were given a tour of the different offices and each office took some time to explain what they do. We had talked about these offices in weeks prior to County Government Day, but the tour helped give the kids a visual on what these offices look like in action. After the tour, the kids put their knowledge of the different offices to the test with County Government Jeopardy. We went up against other local schools that were in attendance, Harvard and Sutton. Our students had a lot of fun with this and they apparently retained quite a bit of information about local government because they won jeopardy! They did a great job. The rest of the day was devoted to learning more about how law and order is maintained throughout the county and beyond. Some state troopers were kind enough to drop in and talk to all of the students about what their job looked like and about some experiences that they have had over the course of their careers. The kids seemed genuinely intrigued and asked a lot of good questions. The last event of the day was a mock trial that pitted Sandy Creek (prosecution) against Sutton (defense) in a murder/arson case. The honorable Michael P. Burns presided over the mock trial and students from both schools acted as attorneys, witnesses, and jurors to create a very realistic court case simulation. It was fun to watch and students should now have a more concrete idea on how the Clay County Court functions.
