Help Avoid Summer Reading and Math Loss

The Department of Education and SCNUSD #5 Want to See YOUR CHILD Succeed!

The Department of Education and SCNUSD #5 is concerned about your child's summer loss...especially in reading and math.  HERE is a link to Summer Learning Programs available from the Department of Education which are FREE resources!

NE LB 1081 goes into effect with the 2019-2020 school year, with the goal of having all students reading at their grade level by THIRD GRADE, and then continuing to grow.  Three times per year, our District will require a reading assessment in our elementary grades, with the primary purpose to identify reading deficiencies, and then address these with an individualized reading plan for your child, including small group or individual instruction being given.

We want to help our students be successful with this goal, as summer reading loss is a concern.

  • HERE is a link to help your child find a book at their current grade level (use your AR reading reports to find your child's reading level OR contact the school).
  • In addition to this, at Lawrence/Nelson, we are working with the Nelson Library program and hosting our own reading workshops weekly at the Lawrence site on Tuesdays at 3 PM during the month of June.  Read more on the school website at:  http://www.southcentralunified.org/vnews/display.v/ART/5cc28406cd700?in_archive=1...where we are combining our PBIS passport with our summer reading goals!

And it's not just Reading, it is important for children to stay on top of their Math skills as well over the summer...

  • Did you know that the typical child, regardless of socioeconomic status, loses approximately 2.6 months of grade-level equivalency in math skills over the summer months each year?
  • A fun way to keep math skills sharp over the summer is by joining the Summer Math Challenge, a FREE math-skills program designed for students who have just completed first through eighth grade. The Summer Math Challenge can help your child retain math skills learned during the school year and keep them on the path towards college and careers.
  • How does this work?  For six weeks in the summer, parents receive daily emails with fun activities and links to educational resources. When the program ends, parents can print an award certificate to celebrate their child’s summer math accomplishment!
