South Central #5 Sophomores Participate in Connect the Dots Career Exploration Day
The Lawrence/Nelson and Sandy Creek Sophomore Career Development class attended the Connect the Dots workshop organized by the UNL Extension office on Wednesday, March 31st at Central Community College in Hastings. The students worked in pairs with an individual in the same career cluster and participated in a simulation activity.
During the activity, students were given different scenarios ranging from needing to obtain a GED before continuing on with their post-secondary education to being ready to pursue a bachelor’s degree at a university. Depending upon each situation, students had to navigate whether they needed to complete courses to be able to enter the program each student was hoping to pursue or if they were able to begin working on their academic programs. Upon completing their education requirements, students then had to “find a job” by speaking with industry professionals. If students did not have the educational requirements needed for the career of choice, they had to continue their education and receive the appropriate certification or degree in order to be able to obtain the career of choice. The activity was an eye opening experience for students and revealed there are many avenues one may take before ultimately achieving their professional goals.
After lunch in the Central Community College cafeteria, students were able to tour a few areas of the campus, participate in a motivational activity, and honed their skills on resume writing.
