Elementary in Full Swing!

Grandparents Day Set for October 10th

Welcome to the first full week of school!  With 99 students in grades K – 6 and an extremely enthusiastic staff, we have started off the year on a very positive note!  I wanted to let you know about a few upcoming events in our school, and changes that are being made as well.

I attended recess with the younger grades this week, and it was evident how excited the kids were to be back and see their friends, as well as how much enthusiasm the staff showed to be back working with the students.  From Mr. Niederklein's football team losing with dignity, to the "wild bull pen" the kids had in another corner of the playground, to the kids pretending to save lives under the playground equipment, it was an entertaining experience!  What vivid imaginations!

Bussing.  On a more serious note, when picking up your elementary students in Nelson, we are now asking all elementary students who get off the bus at the high school to please use the sidewalk on the north side of the school and to wait to leave until the busses depart the parking lot (around 4:05 PM) for safety reasons.  This makes for a safer loading/unloading zone for our students.

Accelerated Reader Program.  District-wide, we are working on measures to get our kids reading more.  This year, we are asking students to read at least 15 minutes on their own at home each day.  We are going to be testing our students in the AR program every quarter, and if 90% of the students in our district reach their AR goal (set individually by their reading test – not the same amount of points across a grade level), then we will have a 1 PM dismissal on the last day of school this semester (December 19th)!  Additionally, we will be having an assembly each quarter to recognize those students who reach their AR goal!  We are asking for your support at home in helping this to happen.

Listed below are the STAR Testing dates, which will allow the classroom teachers and the librarian to set a student’s AR reading goal.  This chart also lists the number of days of reading for each quarter’s goal, and the dates of the AR assemblies.

Handbook Forms.  If you haven’t done so already, please make sure to turn in all of the forms from the student handbook, as well as the technology handbook.  If you have questions on what has and has not been turned in, please do not hesitate to call Angie at the elementary.
