Chills and thrills for a cause

Students and staff dress up to support Make-A-Wish

Treats, costumes, pumpkins and haunted houses still doesn’t match the attention Sandy Creek students bring on Halloween day. Every year students eagerly dress up for Halloween to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Nebraska, a non-profit organization that grants wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions. Student Council (STUCO) sponsors the annual event, asking students and staff to donate $2 to help the children.

“Dressing up was like hitting two birds with one stone. I got to dress up with my friends and donate to Make-A-Wish to help children with medical conditions,” said junior Maggie Rieckman.

STUCO is a representative group that encourages students to get involved in school affairs and and charitable causes. Sandy Creeks STUCO participates in the Halloween Make-A-Wish fundraiser every year to try and encourage their students to help the children at Make-A-Wish and to spread the word about a national charity that helps children on the local level. Every STUCO organization in the state, through the Nebraska Association of Student Councils (NASC), is encouraged to raise funds for this charity annually.

“I think that it’s great that every group in the state raises money from Make-A-Wish because what they do really helps the kids and their families find something to look forward to during the tough times that they face,” said junior STUCO member Kyra Sorensen.

Participation wasn’t as strong as in years past, but charitable and enthusiastic students and staff members still participated by donating and sporting their Halloween attire. Some generous participants donated without exercising their privilege to wear a costume. Despite the lower participation at this year’s event, STUCO managed to raise $62.10 to help make a child’s dream come true.

“I think that it is a fun way to help students get involved to help out people in need, and it is for a good cause,” said senior Anna Berengue.
