Epley Awarded KHOP

Receives 1 of 3 Scholarships

Hayden Epley, senior at Lawrence/Nelson High School, was recently awarded the Kearney Health Opportunities Program (KHOP) scholarship in Radiology. Six students from across the state, who scored a minimum ACT composite of 23 or above, were chosen as finalists and interviewed by panelists from the University of Nebraska-Kearney (UNK) and the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC).  Epley is the daughter of Ethan and Dana Epley of rural Nora, Nebraska, and the granddaughter of Edd and Ruth Epley of Nora, Nebraska and Linda and the late Ron Paxton of Stapleton, Nebraska.

Only three students are accepted in the KHOP for this position. KHOP is a cooperative program between UNK and UNMC. Epley will receive a full tuition scholarship at UNK, follow a special curriculum, and participate in professional development activities at UNK that will prepare her for her healthcare program at UNMC. They will receive admission to their specified healthcare program at UNMC upon satisfactory completion of all requirements within the prescribed timeline.

The purpose of KHOP is to recruit and educate students from rural Nebraska who are committed to returning to rural Nebraska to practice healthcare. Epley will attend two years at UNK and two years at UNMC before attaining her Bachelor of Science degree in Radiology.

UNMC has completed a state of the art building on the UNK campus to help address the critical health care provider shortages in rural Nebraska and to expand access to UNMC College of Allied Health Professions programs. There are more than 12 allied health programs to choose from in KHOP. For more information about UNK’s pre-professional health programs visit http://www.unk.edu/healthsciences.
