Southern Nebraska Conference Holds Quiz Bowl Tournament

The Southern Nebraska Conference Quiz Bowl Tournament was held on Monday, March 8th at David City.  Sandy Creek was represented by two teams in the 17 team tournament.  A quiz bowl match consists of a toss up question (worth 5 points) followed by a bonus question (worth 10 points) given to a team that successfully answers the toss up question.  Twelve toss up questions comprised a match.  Several warm up matches were held before the double elimination tournament commenced.

The Sandy Creek White team of McKenzie Bohlen, Zac Corman, Lillie Cox, Leiah Mueller, and Jaylin Sutton gained valuable experience at the tournament.  They lost their first warm up match 10-15 to the Centennial B team and lost their second warm up to Fillmore Central A (tournament champions) by a score of 35-45.  In the double elimination bracket SC White finished the 12 question match in a 25-25 tie with Centennial A before losing the tiebreaker.  Centennial A placed fourth in the tournament.  SC White was then eliminated from the tournament with a loss to Fillmore Central B 15-55.  Although this young team did not win a match they were very competitive with teams that did extremely well in the tournament.

The Sandy Creek Red team of Breanna Brennfoerder, Jacob Hagemeier, Jenna Heinz, Kristen Rohrer, and Noah Shackelford had a great outing.  In the warm up rounds they defeated Fairbury A 65-45 and Heartland B 80-15.  In the double elimination tournament they defeated Fillmore Central B in a close match by a score of 45-30.  They then defeated Wilber-Clatonia A 95-0.  In their third match SC Red was leading after nine questions before David City A came roaring back to hand SC Red their first loss 45-50, which placed SC in the consolation bracket.

SC Red then faced Heartland A and won by a score of 65-15.  The victory earned them a match with Centennial A, with Sandy Creek being victorious 55-45.  This win set up a rematch with the David City A team.  It started to look like a replay of the first meeting of these teams, with SC dominating through the first eight questions before David City mounted a come back attempt.  SC Red was victorious 40-35 and the victory placed them in the championship match.  The championship match against Fillmore Central A was closely contested, with Sandy Creek holding the lead several times before finally succumbing to FCA 40-65.

Their performance in the tournament earned Sandy Creek A the final placing of second in the tournament.  The Sandy Creek community can be extremely proud of how they were represented in the tournament by both teams of young scholars.

This marks the tenth year of the SNC Quiz Bowl tournament.  In that time Sandy Creek has placed first three times and second once.
