SC Kindergarteners ‘graduate’ from ABC Bootcamp

CCN—SC Kindergarteners ‘graduate’ from ABC Bootcamp

By Rita Brhel

Sandy Creek’s Kindergarten class of 41 students recently graduated from ABC Bootcamp in red-carpet fashion.

This is the third year that SC teachers Elizabeth Spray and Josey VonSpreckelsen have begun the new school year with ABC Bootcamp, an idea they originally found through the online resource Kindergarten Smorgasboard.

“It gives them a jump into the reading program,” VonSpreckelsen said.

Through ABC Bootcamp, she and Spray explained, the Kindergarten classroom focuses on a single letter of the alphabet all day every day through songs and hands-on activities. The finale is a fashion show for the rest of SC Elementary, each student sporting a paper bag vest made at home with their parents.

“They get really excited about it,” VonSpreckelsen said.

“We really want to involve the parents,” Spray added. “It’s really important to have that extra connection with the parents.”

Each vest features a letter, she continued, and creativity is encouraged. Some examples through the years include blown-up balloons attached to a vest dedicated to the letter B, big pink and purple bows for the letter P, and licorice candy for the letter L. One student’s vest sported a karate shirt for the letter K. Another student covered her vest in photos of her and her mom for the letter A, as both of their names started with the letter.

“It’s fun to see their personalities come out with it,” Spray said. “They’re just super proud.”
